While it might not sound like the most exciting way to spend your weekend, the 13th Annual Drought Tolerant Plant Festival in Encino actually offers a full two-day’s worth of fun activities for your family. The festival goes from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday (June 8) and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday (June 9.) The best part of the weekend? The activities are completely free!
The festival, which takes place at the Sepulveda Garden Center on Magnolia Boulevard, offers plenty of educational opportunities for you to teach your children different lessons about plant life. Plus, you’ll get tons of ideas on how to save money and water by landscaping with drought tolerant plants. Your kids will also love the chance to see displays and demonstration gardens like the “Touchable Garden” and the “Under the Sea” exhibit.
There will be tons of chances to purchase plants, pottery, books, and crafts. If you’re interested, there will be guest speakers lecturing on topics like container gardening, California native plants, and bonsai trees. Your kids will enjoy the arts and crafts activities where they can create their very own Father’s Day Gifts to take home. They’ll also get the chance to pot their own plants and play games.
Events like these are always a great way for you to open a discussion with your kids about the kinds of things they can be doing to help the environment. Showing them the beautiful flowers they can grow and the gardens they can make are not only great ways for them to be creative, but it also helps them become a little more connected to the world around them. Plus, there will be so much for them to look at during the festival besides just plants (things like rocks, crystals, and live plant art will also be on display.)
The festival is being sponsored by The Los Angeles Cactus and Succulent Society, which was founded back in the 1930s. The group meets in the San Fernando Valley every month to help put together hands-on workshops, presentations, and plant sales for local communities. They’ve also recently updated the Sepulveda Garden Center, where the festival takes place.
Make sure you take this opportunity to introduce your kids to gardening and saving water. It’ll be a fun weekend for all!
