The temperatures may be warm in Southern California, but there is no shortage of family activities that include the opportunity to see manmade snow and ice in the area. Here are some of the area’s most popular winter activities.
Top Spots to Play in the Snow Around LA
Palm Springs Aerial Tramway: Did you know that you can get from the desert to snow in as little as 12 minutes? Load up the family and take a ride on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway to see the beautiful snow-capped peak of Mount San Jacinto (over 8000 ft above sea level!). You and your kids can go sledding, make snowmen, ski, have snowball fights and enjoy a fun filled day in the snow. You can rent cross country skis and snowshoes but you should plan to bring your own sleds. Tickets are $24.95 for adults and $16.95 for kids.
SnowDrift Snow Tubing Park: SnowDrift Snow Tubing Park is Southern California’s oldest and largest snow tubing park with powdery slopes perfect for kids (and adults) of all ages. With great attention to safety, kids can race down the beginning, intermediate or advanced slopes on special snow tubes. This is perfect for a fun and active day of family fun! Cost: $15/person for each hour. Parking is $5/car.
Snow Valley Mountain Resort: This family friendly resort is located in Running Springs and features the Snow Valley Children’s Learning Center and Snow Play area, which gives your little ones a chance to learn how to ski from highly trained ski instructors who help to make the first experience with skiing a positive one. The Children’s Learning Center offers ski and snowboarding lessons to kids (ages 4–12).
Mountain High Resort is just a little more than one hour outside of Los Angeles with no mountain driving. It is one of the easiest drives to the mountains, located in the Big Pines Region of the Angeles National Forest. It also features a highly acclaimed Children’s Academy to help your kids get the hang of skiing and snowboarding. Offering lessons and classes for kids as young as four years old and virtual snow simulators for toddlers (up to 3) to help them get their footing in the white stuff, this is a snow lover’s dream. If your family is looking for a day of tubing, the North Resort features a Tubing Park with 10 tubing lanes, two moving carpets and custom tubes. There is something for everyone at Mountain High Resort.
Kidspace Snow Days: If you are not looking for a day trip to the mountains, but would prefer to stay closer to home, head over to Kidspace for the annual Snow Days event! Bring your hats, boots and mittens, scarves and gloves and play in real fresh snow, that will be delivered right to the children’s museum. Learn about how snow is made, participate in winter craft projects, cookie decorating, listen to music and make snows and snowmen Admission is $11, and includes most activities (cookie decorating is an extra $3). Snow days are Dec. 26-30. 2015.
