If you’re looking for a fun way to spend the last weekend in June, don’t miss out on Pirate Invasion at Belmont Pier in Long Beach. The two-day event goes from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, so you’ll have plenty of time to take advantage of all the activities they’re offering.
The event promises to have the ‘largest gathering of pirates, scallywags, free booters, Privateers, and buccaneers,’ but your kids will mainly be in awe of these characters come to life. There will be tons of shopping, courtesy of the pirate market, live music (by featured band Zen Robbi), and Alfredo’s pirate pub in case you need a little liquid courage to face all these pirates.
Twice a day there will be pirate battles (complete with cannons and muskets), sword fights, and authentic pirate encampments. If you head over to the pirate ship on the far South end of the pier, you can view black powder and firing demonstrations. Plus, ship rides are available on the wharf. Your little ones will love the treasure hunt on the beach, plus they’ll get the chance to participate in a costume contest. There will also be Pirate Booty Arts and Crafts Booths. Even if your family doesn’t feel like getting in on the pirate action, just walking around the pier should be interesting—there will be belly and fire dancers as well!
One of the things you definitely have to catch is the Following Seas production of “Treasure Island.” There will be four performances throughout both days of the event, and attendance is first come first serve. Try to remember to bring towels or blankets, so your family will be comfortable. Each performance will be a mini-play of part of the celebrated Robert Louis Stevenson story, so festival goers can stop in and watch a show without needing any background info. This is perfect for little ones who might not be able to sit through a longer show.
If you’re in need for sustenance, there will be plenty of food and ‘grog’ booths at the end of the pier. But the best part about Pirate Invasion is that there’s absolutely no cost to get in! So get ready to find some hidden treasure and perfect your sword-fighting this weekend.
