California is known for it’s sunny weather, beaches, celebrities and laid back and welcoming environment.  It is one of the most popular places in the world to vacation and why not?  There are so many fun and unique things to do.  So if you are looking for a few unusual and unique ideas for things to do in Southern California, here are some of our very favorite spots to check out that you might not otherwise hear about!

  • For the true adventurer and risk taker, the Lost Sunken City is a very cool piece of California’s landscape history.  Several decades ago, a landslide caused many houses that had been built on the coast of San Pedro, CA to fall into the sea.  What is left is the ruins of broken roads and pipes, but the coolest thing is that it has been a site for artistic creativity for years.  You will find the ruins completely covered with graffiti art. Keep in mind that technically, people are not supposed to explore this area, so do so at your own risk!  Address:  500 W Paseo Del Mar, San Pedro, CA, 90731
  • Want a unique view of LA?  Head to the observation deck of the 27 story Los Angeles City Hall for a view that you will not forget!  Address:  200 N Spring St, Los Angeles, CA 90012
  • Venice Canals:  Are you longing for a European vacation but cannot seem to make it out of the state?  Well, head to Venice Canals, where California meets Italy!  Located in the Venice section of LA, it is marked by the man-made canals meant to recreate the feel of Italy.  This area was renovated in the early 1990s and has become a very popular spot for a romantic stroll.  Address:  Carroll Ct & Eastern Canal Ct, Venice, CA 90293.
  • Salvation Mountain is an area that maintains the work of legendary folk artist Leonard Clark Knight.  It is one of the largest outdoor art installments in all of California and a must see for art lovers.  Address:  601 East Beal Rd., Niland CA. 92233
  • Take a hike on the famed Vasquez Rocks, the site of many movies and a great place to spend a day out of the beaten path! Address:  10700 Escondido Canyon Road, Agua Dulce, CA 91350.
  • Elmer Long’s Bottle Tree Ranch is a cool place to admire the more than 200 metal welded trees created by Elmer Long, who has been working on this masterpiece for more than 50 years!  Address:  National Trails Hwy, Oro Grande, CA 92368
  • The Whaley House has been named one of the most haunted places in America.  If you are into exploring the supernatural, you should make time to visit this small house in Olde Town San Diego!  Address: 2476 San Diego Avenue, San Diego CA 92110
  • Border Field State Park is a unique park situated right on the border of California and Mexico where you can go horseback riding, walk on the beach and catch a glimpse of the beautiful wildlife in the area.  Address:  2476 San Diego Avenue, San Diego CA 92110.
