Summertime and fun go hand in hand! Now that your kids are home from school, you have more time to spend together, no homework to struggle with and bedtime can be a little bit later. Luckily, San Diego has many exciting things to do with your family this summer that will not break the bank. Here is our list of 7 things that you should definitely put on your summer bucket list!
- Spend a day (or several days) at the beach! San Diego is famous for beautiful beaches and is home to 33 unique beaches. Some of the most popular kid friendly beaches in the area include Del Mar, La Jolla, Mission Bay, Mission Beach, and Ocean Beach, just to name a few! So, pack a picnic, some sand toys, beach chairs and you will ready for a fun day in the sun!
- If you are looking to spend a day at the park, pack up your crew and head to Mission Bay Park! This park is the largest man-made aquatics park in the country, boasting over 4000 acres — 46% land and 54% water. You and your family can play on the playgrounds, ride bikes, walk on the paved trails, fly a kite or just people watch.
- Take your kids to explore Balboa Park, where you can go see the animals at the San Diego Zoo, head to the San Diego History Museum for a visit with some cool dinosaurs, or learn about outer space at the Air and Space Museum. Balboa Park hosts all of these gems and much more for you and your family!
- Coronado is a beautiful area that your entire family will love. You can visit the Hotel del Coronado, take a long walk on the 7 miles of area beaches, all of which have lifeguards. When you get hungry, you will find restaurants and ice cream! And if you are up for a family bike ride, there are several rental shops that can meet your needs.
- If you want to expose your family to some great San Diego history, then take your family to Old Town, the birthplace of modern California, where the first Spanish settlers arrived back in 1769. Bring your appetite for your visit — the food is amazing, especially if you love Mexican cuisine. Another favorite for older kids is the tour of the “haunted” Whaley House.
- Summer is one of the very best times to go whale watching! In fact, in June through September, the largest number of blue whales in the world feed off of the California coast. You can take your kids to see these amazing creatures in person on any number of whale watching cruises. Or, if you prefer to see them while safely on land, there are a number of great viewing spots including Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve and Birch Aquarium.
- If you are looking for a great indoor activity, take your kids to the New Children’s Museum, that encourages creative, interactive and inventive play!
