Summer is winding down and you want to pack some last days of fun in before the kids head back to school. Here are some fun and free activities for you and your kids to do in August!

  1. Pack up your suits, sunscreen, body boards, and a picnic and go spend one last day at one of San Diego’s 30 beautiful beaches. The crowds are much smaller during the week, and you and the kids will enjoy a relaxing day by the ocean, playing in the sand and jumping the waves. Mission Bay and Coronado are two top choices for families with kids!
  2. Throughout the year, Balboa Park is host to the House of Pacific Relations Sunday Lawn Programs. These free programs highlight a different country each Sunday. In August, you can learn about Lithuania, Panama, Hungary, Palestine and Germany. So treat your family to ethnic food, song and dance.
  3. Another festive and free summer activity in Balboa Park is the Twilight in the Park Summer Concerts. These concerts are held in the Spreckels Organ Pavilion every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evening from 6:15-7:15pm. VIsit their website for the full August schedule!!
  4. San Diego’s Embarcadero is a great new place to take a stroll along the San Diego Bay and take in all of the beauty that makes San Diego spectacular. The Embarcadero is located along Broadway and features the new Waterfront Park. With historic and cultural markers, you and your kids can learn a bit about San Diego’s history as well.
  5. Take your kids for a bike ride to finish out the summer as well. The Bayshore Bikeway is 24 miles, the majority of which is actually a car-free bikeway where you can jump on and off depending on your comfort level!
  6. The first Tuesday in August, the California Surf Museum is open, free of charge to the public. You and your family can learn about the sport which is so much a part of the fabric of the coastal area, see artifacts and learn about the history of surfing. You only pay $5 for regular admission to this museum.
  7. Looking for a family movie night that does not break the bank but is not on your couch? Summer Movies in the Park features a kid-friendly flick every Friday and Saturday night in various locations around San Diego County. Check here for the current August schedule. Favorites include Big Hero 6, Cinderella, Guardians of the Galaxy, Annie, The Lego Movie and Frozen Sing-Along!
  8. Looking to show the kids a little of San Diego’s rich history? Take them for an outing to Old Town in San Diego where you can explore the 12 acres of historical sites and buildings, shops and restaurants that make San Diego unique.
  9. Do you have any sports enthusiasts in your family? If so, take them to the US Olympic Training Center. Free guided tours are held on Saturdays at 11am and you can take a self-guided tour anytime Monday-Saturday 9am-4pm.
  10. Keep them moving with a trip to Mission Bay Park. Bike, walk, jog or rollerblade around the 27 miles of beautiful pathways that run parallel to the ocean and do not miss the 4600 acre aquatic playground. Perhaps the perfect way to finish out this summer!
