By the time August arrives, you are likely thinking — where did this summer go??!  Your kids have had 6 weeks at home since school let out and yet, it’s flown by.  To finish the summer strong, you may want to squeeze some extra fun before school starts again.  What should you do??  Here are some great ideas for some August fun that will not break the bank!

Free Things To Do With Kids in Los Angeles

  1. Since bedtime is not as much of an issue in the summer, why not pack a blanket and a lawn chair take your kids out one evening in August for a free outdoor movie?  Marina Del Rey offers free movies on the lawn of Burton Chase Park on Fridays during the month of August, featuring The Lego Movie and Back to the Future II.  And, if your kids are a bit older, Cal State Northridge hosts CSUN Summer Movie Fest on Thursday evenings through the end of August, featuring Jaws, Guardians of the Galaxy and ET!
  2. There is still time to take advantage of free museum days at the various LA and Orange County museums.  For example, Kidspace Children’s Museum hosts a free family night on the first Tuesday of each month (4-8pm) and The Children’s Museum at La Habra opens for free on the first  Saturday of each month from 10-5pm.  Another family favorite is the Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits.  Their grounds are open to the public free of charge every day (there is a charge to enter the museum).
  3. If your kids love animals, consider taking them to the Pacific Marine Mammal Center, open daily from 10-4pm for animal viewing and programs.  They will see rescued sea lions and seals, learn about their habitat
  4. Most kids are fascinated with lighthouses and history. If you want to take your kids on an adventure before school starts, head to Point Fermin Lighthouse where you can visit for free Tuesday-Sunday between 1-4pm.
  5. What to keep your kids moving? How about a long, beautiful bike ride before they head back to school. You can hop on the LA Beach Bike Path which is 27 miles of gorgeous views of the Ocean.  You will share the path with joggers, walkers and those on roller blades, so weekdays are generally less busy than weekends.
  6. Another great evening activity before heading back to school is to go to a free Public Star Party at the Griffith Observatory.  The next one is scheduled for August 22, but if you miss that, do not forget that you can go any night that the Observatory is open (and the skies are clear)!  It’s free!
  7. If you are looking for some water fun to round out your summer, there are several free splash pads to enjoy!  Stoner Park features a nice gradual entry so it appeals to kids of all ages and skill levels, and waterslides for those who want an adventure. Kids get in free and adults pay only $2.50.  Another great option is Virginia Avenue Park in Santa Monica.
