Halloween with young kids is fun and festive but keeping your kids from being scared each year can be a challenge.  Many Halloween activities can be very frightening for kids, so you may be looking for fun things to do that are less TRICK and more TREAT!  Here are some of our favorite not-so-scary Halloween activities for families in LA.

  • Boo at the LA Zoo:  Each year, the LA Zoo offers fun, family friendly Halloween festivities throughout the month of October.  You and your family can explore the zoo’s dark caves to learn about how nocturnal animals are able to see and move around in the dark, or you can touch some of the zoo’s scaly and crawly creatures, and even meet some of the spookiest animals in the zoo. Each weekends in October, you will also be able to enjoy festive storytelling, pumpkin carving demonstrations, arts and craft activities, and a graveyard safari!
  • The happiest place on earth gets in on the non-scary Halloween action as well. Take your family to Disneyland between September 11th-November 1st for Halloween Time at Disneyland Resort where you and your family can get tickets for Mickey’s Halloween Party, or take part in the other spooky events scattered all over the park.  You will find Space Mountain is turned into a ghost galaxy, as well as a pumpkin festival on Main Street with hundreds of hand carved pumpkins to see!  Your kids will love it!
  • Brick or Treat at Legoland is held on the evenings of October 3, 17, 24 and 30th.  Treat your kids to a Brick-or-Treat Party at LEGOLAND California Resort where they can enjoy music, candy, surprises and snacks including a ghost cruise, dance party, and a costume contest.
  • Knott’s Spooky Farm in Buena Park runs every weekend in October from 10am-5pm. This daytime event is a non-scary celebration of cheer rather than fear with shows and activities all geared for kids ages 3-11.  Your kids can sing Karaoke, join the Peanuts Costume Parade, and wind around in the Spooky Hollow Maze.
  • Pumpkin Trains in Perris is held at Orange Empire Railway Museum on October 17-18 and 24-25 (10am-4pm).  Your kids can ride trolleys to the pumpkin patch where they can pick out and decorate your own pumpkin. You can also enjoy a bounce house, a Spooky Caboose, a costume contest and more Halloween activities. Reservations are recommended.
  • Scarecrow and Pumpkin Festival in Costa Mesa will be held October 17-18, 2015 from 10am-3pm.  This wildly popular community event offers pumpkin picking, fire truck rides, train rides, face painting, rocketeers, and food and treats. You can also enter the build-your-own scarecrow contest.  Admission is free.
  • The Haunted Museum at La Brea Tar Pits will be held on Sunday, October 25th from 5-8pm. Kids will learn about the expedition of Egyptologist Dr. Pyra Mid and how her dog Sphinxy helped to thwart tomb bandits. They will help gather clues, meet the Museum’s experts, and help put ancient artifacts back in order.  The event is geared toward kids of all ages.  Kids can wear costumes and participate in the Haunted Costume Parade.
