Summer has flown by and somehow August is already here. The kids are heading back to school in just a few weeks. It’s time to pack in some last minute fun before bedtimes get earlier, alarm clocks are set, and lunchboxes are packed each and every day for school. Here are a wide variety of must see attractions in Southern California to enjoy before the kids head back to school this fall!

  1. Surprise Them With a Trip to a Theme Park: Southern California has so many unique, fun and exciting theme parks for kids of all ages. Disneyland is one of the most obvious and best choices for kids of all ages, from toddlers to teenagers, with a wide variety of rides and attractions, from childhood classics like “It’s a Small World” and “Dumbo” to adventure rides like “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Splash Mountain”. Legoland California is another great choice. It is perfect for kids aged 2-12 and features rides and more than 52 MILLION Lego bricks. Another favorite California theme park is Knott’s Berry Farm, which is located in Buena Park, CA, and boasts some of the best thrill rides in the entire state! With extended hours and a brand new ride, it is a great place to spend one of the last days of summer!

  1. Spend a Family Day at the Beach: There is nothing like spending a day at a Southern California beach. People travel from thousands of miles away to vacation here and us locals sometimes forget how special and spectacular these beautiful beaches really are. So, before school starts, pack your towels, sunscreen and maybe a picnic and spend a relaxing day by the pacific coast! Crystal Cove State Park in Laguna Beach, has spectacular views, and has a great shallow area where the surf breaks close to shore and the little ones can wade safely. La Jolla has a breathtaking beach and a great kids aquarium (Birch Aquarium) that is a fun extra for the kids. Coronado Central Beach in San Diego is another favorite for families with beautiful white sand, calm waters and a beautiful view of the infamous Hotel Del Coronado.

  1. Spend Some Time Making Learning Fun at Unique Museums: Another fun way to spend the dog days of summer with your kids is by taking them to some of Southern California’s most popular and kid-friendly museums. Take the kids for a dig at Page Museum at La Brea Tarpits and your kids will learn about fossils, the ice age and paleontology! At the California Science Center, also in Los Angeles, you and your kids get to explore the wonders of science through interactive exhibits, live demonstrations and films! And, if you are closer to San Diego, check out Balboa Park one day before school starts. You and your kids can explore one (or more) of the many kid friendly museums on the grounds like the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, San Diego Natural History Museum, San Diego Air & Space Museum, and The San Diego Zoo.
